Recommended Products
Only the essentials. No gimmicks, no unnecessary gadgets — just what actually makes a difference to your baby's sleep.
You don't need to spend hundreds on sleep gadgets. Most babies sleep better with a dark room, the right temperature, and consistent routines — not expensive products. Everything on this page is something we'd genuinely recommend, and most of it costs under £30.
🌑Blackout Blinds
Research shows even dim light (5-40 lux) can suppress melatonin by up to 78% in young children. Proper blackout is one of the most impactful changes you can make.
Tommee Tippee Sleeptime Portable Blackout Blind
Suction-cup portable blind — brilliant for travel and rental properties. Goes up in minutes.
Gro Anywhere Portable Blackout Blind
Similar portable option with a strong reputation. Velcro attachment stays put once installed.
DIY Blackout — Black Bin Bags + Masking Tape
Honestly? This works just as well. Tape bin bags over the window. It's not pretty but it's free and effective.
🔊White Noise Machines
Consistent background noise helps mask household sounds and can aid transitions between sleep cycles. Keep it below 50dB and place it away from the cot.
Dreamegg D1 Sound Machine
Compact, rechargeable, with a good range of sounds. Stays on all night — no auto-shutoff to wake them up.
Hatch Rest+ (2nd Gen)
Premium option with night light, time-to-rise, and app control. More than you need to start, but grows with your child.
Free alternative — Spotify/YouTube white noise
A phone or speaker playing white noise on loop works perfectly well. Just make sure it doesn't auto-stop after an hour.
🛏️Sleeping Bags
Sleeping bags replace loose blankets (which are a suffocation risk) and help maintain a consistent temperature throughout the night. Choose the right tog for the room temperature.
Tommee Tippee Grobag
Available in multiple tog ratings. Well-made, widely available, and trusted by parents across the UK.
Aden + Anais Sleeping Bag
Lightweight muslin option — lovely for warmer months or warmer rooms. Breathable and soft.
🌡️Room Thermometers
The Lullaby Trust recommends keeping the room between 16-20°C. Overheating is a known SIDS risk factor. A simple thermometer takes the guesswork out.
Tommee Tippee Groegg2
Colour-changing room thermometer and night light in one. Amber glow when the room is the right temperature.
Any basic digital room thermometer
You don't need a fancy one. Any digital thermometer that shows the current room temperature will do the job.
🔴Red/Amber Night Lights
Red and amber light doesn't suppress melatonin the way white or blue light does. If you need to see during night feeds or nappy changes, use a warm-toned light.
Tommee Tippee Groegg2 (amber mode)
Does double duty — room thermometer and amber night light. One less thing to buy.
USB Red LED Bulb
A cheap red LED bulb in a bedside lamp works perfectly. No special equipment needed.
📹Baby Monitors
A monitor lets you respond to your baby while giving you the freedom to leave the room. Audio-only is perfectly fine — video is a preference, not a necessity.
BT Audio Baby Monitor 400
Simple, reliable audio monitor. Long range, low interference. Does exactly what you need.
eufy SpaceView Pro Video Monitor
If you want video — large screen, no WiFi required (more secure), and good night vision.
📚Books We Recommend
These are evidence-based, well-written books that respect your parenting choices. No guilt-trips, no one-size-fits-all methods.
The Gentle Sleep Book — Sarah Ockwell-Smith
A balanced, evidence-based guide that covers newborn to toddler. Non-judgmental and practical.
Precious Little Sleep — Alexis Dubief
Straightforward, funny, and practical. Covers the full range of gentle to more structured approaches.
Sweet Sleep — La Leche League
Essential reading if you're breastfeeding and co-sleeping. Evidence-based risk reduction information.
Products we don't recommend
- Weighted sleep sacks or blankets — The NHS advises against these. They can restrict movement and chest expansion, and may contribute to overheating.
- Sleep pods and nests — Not recommended for unsupervised sleep by the Lullaby Trust. A flat, clear cot is safest.
- Cot bumpers — Suffocation risk. The Lullaby Trust says keep the cot completely clear.
- Amber teething necklaces — No evidence they work, and they pose a choking and strangulation risk.
